Research shows that the quality of the relationship with your therapist is the best predictor of successful therapeutic work; even more so than the therapist’s clinical approach (Horvarth, 2001). It’s therefore really important to find a therapist who feels like a good match for you. This means someone who you feel safe and at ease with but is also able to challenge you to see things from a new perspective.
It can be helpful to have an idea of what you would like to get out of the process before you begin so that you are able to start with a sense of what you’re looking for. Some of the questions you could consider are:
- Why therapy and why now?
- What would you like to work on?
- What are you hoping for from therapy?
Once you have reflected on these, you can use some of your answers to help you think about what you would like to know about the therapist. For example:
- How do you envision our work together?
- How do you describe your approach?
- Do you specialize in any of the areas that I am looking for help with?
I offer a free introductory meeting because I believe it’s so important that you have a chance to meet me, ask questions and generally get a sense of how the sessions might feel before deciding to work together.
If you would like to arrange a meeting, please get in touch via the contact form on this page and we can discuss a date and time that suits you.
